Make your practice part of your week (not your to-do list!)

One of the most quietly powerful features in the Yoga x Life app is the ability to set your own weekly practice goal - in short, the number of sessions you’d like to do each week.

It looks simple, but the impact can be big. Instead of “I should do more yoga,” you start to move toward “I usually do two or three classes a week,” which is exactly how practice turns into habit rather than another thing on the to‑do list.

Why (measurable) weekly goals matter more than good intentions

Research on habit formation and exercise tells us that specific, repeated actions (like one or more sessions per week) are far more likely to stick than vague intentions. When you set a clear weekly goal in the app, you turn practice into a rhythm, not a random event, and you reduce decision fatigue because you already know what you’re aiming for! This is where yoga starts to feel woven into your life rather than squeezed into the gaps.

A gentle way to stay consistent

Studies on exercise adherence show that setting and tracking goals helps people show up more often and stay with it longer. The weekly goal feature is a lightweight way to tap into that.

  • The app quietly keeps track of how many sessions you’ve done against your goal,

  • Seeing your sessions add up is satisfying, and gives you a nudge to keep going when life gets busy,

  • If you want to take it further you can challenge yourself by joining of our practice challenges and not only building the benefits of your practice, but earning some rewards too!

You’re always in charge of your practice

Crucially, you choose your own number. Autonomy is strongly linked to motivation and satisfaction in movement and wellbeing: when the goal feels like it belongs to you, you’re much more likely to stick with it.

You might set:

  • 1–2 sessions per week if you’re in a busy season or just starting out.

  • 3–4 sessions if practice is already part of your routine and you’re ready for more.

There’s no “right” number. You can always adjust as life and energy change. The point is to be in an honest relationship with your practice rather than chasing someone else’s ideal.

It’s about supporting your nervous system, not punishing your body

Regular, moderate practice across the week is kinder to your nervous system than sporadic, intense bursts. Consistent routines have been linked to better mood, sleep, energy and mental health, precisely because they make regulation easier and more predictable.

A weekly practice goal helps you:

  • Build small, reliable anchors into your week for breath, movement and rest.

  • Avoid the “all or nothing” cycle of doing too much, crashing, then starting again from zero.

Instead of trying to fix everything in one big session, you create a pattern of care that can hold you over time.

Space for flexibility, not perfectionism

Because the goal is weekly and self‑set, it invites process‑focused thinking: what feels possible this week? What supports you right now? Research on goal setting suggests that process goals improve enjoyment and reduce pressure compared with rigid outcome goals.

That means:

  • Some weeks you’ll hit your goal, some weeks you won’t - and that’s okay!

  • You can adjust your goal up or down without “failing”; you’re tuning into your actual life.

This feature exists to support you, not to become another metric to obsess over.

Fitting practice into the life you already have

Weekly goals also play well with habit stacking - linking new habits onto existing routines. When you set a goal in the app, you can start to ask: where does yoga naturally fit?

For example:

  • A Monday sunrise class before work to set the tone for the week.

  • A mid‑week Functional Flow to support strength and posture.

  • A Friday Vinyas’aah or a restorative session to mark the shift into weekend.

Your goal sits alongside other rituals like meals, sleep and downtime, making practice feel like part of ordinary life rather than a separate project.

How to use the feature this week

If you haven’t played with this yet, here’s a simple way to start:

  1. Open the Yoga x Life app and set a realistic weekly practice goal (start smaller than you think you “should”).

  2. Choose the specific classes that feel right for your body and schedule - beginner, vinyasa, deep flow, functional flow, restorative or meditation.

  3. Let the app track your sessions, and notice how it feels to see your practice accumulate over the week.

You can tweak the goal as you go. The aim isn’t perfection; it’s a more conscious, compassionate rhythm of practice that supports your strength, mobility, mood, sleep and nervous system over time.
