Yoga x Life has grown and changed many times over the years. From carrying mats between hired rooms to creating a home for our community in Ouseburn, we’ve learned that the heart of a studio isn’t held in one building. It’s created through the people who practise, teach and gather together.
Our move to 51 Lime Street has opened up a possibility that feels deeply aligned with the future we want to create. We’re exploring what it could mean to make our home in a building cared for by the Ouseburn Trust, and to build a lasting relationship with the place and community around us.
For years, our rent went to a corporate investment firm. It lined investors’ pockets; no money was invested back into the Newcastle community. Now, we have the opportunity to support the Ouseburn Trust, a community charity that funds the heritage of the valley. That means our rent can support the place we’re part of and help keep wealth within the community.
Independent businesses, artists, community organisations and local people have all helped shape the Ouseburn’s character. That doesn’t happen by accident; it takes care, commitment and people choosing to be part of the place. We’re proud that Yoga x Life can contribute to this community, not only through our rent, but through the people we bring together and the relationships we build here.
This feels like a chance to bring our values closer to the way we live and work. We’ve spoken for years about community, connection and caring for the places we belong to. Now we can put more of that into practice, through the relationships we build, the people we welcome and the contribution our presence makes.
We’re still exploring what the building could become and how the space might work for everyone who uses it. There are ideas we’re excited about, and we’ll share more as plans develop. For now, we’re grateful to be here and to be part of those conversations.
Change is part of yoga, too. The practice invites us to meet what is changing with attention, to loosen our grip on how things have to look, and to stay open to what might be possible. That doesn’t mean the spaces we share don’t matter.
A welcoming place can help people feel connected and at ease. But the practice itself can travel with us.
Every period of change asks something of the people around a studio. We understand that this new chapter and space will feel right for some and not for others.
We’re especially grateful to the teachers, students and friends who have stayed alongside us, continuing to teach, practise and offer their support while the space takes shape. Yoga teaching asks for care and presence; navigating change asks for stamina, too. The steadiness people have shown has helped this new setting begin to feel like a shared home.
I think back to carrying mats on the Metro, teaching in church halls and hired rooms, and practising outdoors beneath the railway bridges during the pandemic. The surroundings changed, but each time we came together, the essential things were there: breath, movement, attention and the people beside us.
That same spirit is here at Lime Street. We’re creating a new chapter in a place with a strong sense of community, and we feel hopeful about what we can build together.
Thank you for coming with us through each chapter, for rolling out your mats in a new space, and for helping Yoga x Life feel like Yoga x Life wherever we meet.
The space may change. The practice, and the community around it, continue.
