Sun Salutations: Breath, Movement & Rhythm

Our first Foundation Series explores the backbone of vinyasa practice - the Sun Salutations.

If you want to feel more confident in a flowing vinyasa class, this is one of the best places to start. Sun Salutations teach us the core of the principles that underpin many yoga practices. Learn how they work and suddenly a lot of the rest of class starts to make more sense.

Across three weeks we'll break down the familiar sequence and use it to explore some of the most useful foundations of practice: how to coordinate breath and movement, how to support yourself through the hands and core, how to adapt poses to your body, and eventually how to link everything together with greater ease and rhythm.

We'll spend time a bit of extra time making sense of movements like forward folds, plank, chaturanga, cobra, downward dog and lunges before gradually putting them back together.

By the end of the series, you should feel more comfortable following flowing sequences, less preoccupied with keeping up, and more able to concentrate on the experience of practising rather than trying to remember what comes next. Hopefully you’ll even know when you should be breathing in and out (and why!)

The relationship between breath and movement, centre and limbs, effort and ease that we'll explore here crops up everywhere - from your first Flow Slow to much stronger and more complex practices which is why we’ve picked it as our first Foundation Series.

This is a beginner-focused Foundation Series, but it's equally useful if you've been practising for a while and realise you've been moving through Sun Salutations for years without ever really unpacking them.

Each session stands alone, so you can join at any point, although attending all three will allow the ideas to build progressively.
